Komarasankulam Church was built in the 17th century when the colonization of Sri Lanka by the Dutch was at its peak. At the time it was a small chapel built by the Dutch to serve as an outpost for Portuguese Catholics. The old chapel was replaced with a new one in the 1900s and is the one which is seen now. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Srilanka.
