Worship Method:

The worship method practiced within the Kathirkamam temple at Kataragama in Sri Lanka will be based on the Hindu tradition of offering puja (respectful prayer and offerings) to the main deity, Lord Murugan (also known as Subrahmanya). It is believed that Lord Murugan manifests himself at the temple at sunrise and sunset and pilgrims offer their puja - usually standing outside the temple, facing east. They may bring flowers, incense, offerings of fruit, and petals as part of their offerings. Traditionally, seven sacred vessels are lined up and offering are made to each one in turn - beginning with the 'Kadu Kallu' (water pot) and finishing with the 'Pal Kallu' (milk pot). The puja sequences offered within the temple also involve chanting certain incantations and hymns, as well as ringing bells and performing prayer movements such as prostration and other mudras. Pilgrims also often make an offering of betel leaves to the lord, and many also offer archana (fire-based worship). Prayers and offerings may also focus on conciliating the local thevidiyas (demonic figures) who have been known to disturb pilgrims in the past. After making the offering, the deities may be asked to bless the pilgrims with success in whatever endeavor they are undertaking. This most visited temple in SriLanka
