Worshippers offer their prayers to the presiding deity Sri Kandasami (Lord Siva) in three distinct stages: abhishekam (anointing), archanai (offering flowers, incense and other items to the deity), and a deepa aradhanai (lighting lamps). During abhishekam, the priest performs a tradition of pouring milk, water and sacred ash (viboothi) over the deity’s lingam (a symbolic representation of Lord Siva). After this, the priest performs a traditional archanai, which consists of flower offerings, chanting of mantras and circumambulations (pradakshinas) around the deity. During the deepa aradhanai, the priest lights up several ghee lamps that are placed in front of the deity. After this, the individual worshiper prays for prosperity and well-being, followed by any special requests.
