The temple's history dates back to the 18th century and is believed to have been built by the late King Raja Varma from the Pandi Nagar dynasty. 5. The temple celebrates an annual 10 day festival in honour of Vairavar from the 4th to 14th day of the Tamil calendar month of Thai (January-February). 6. During the festival, a magnificent chariot procession carrying the idols of Vairavar and four other deities is taken out in the evening. 7. Worship Method:
The Arulmihu Paththanai Vairavar Temple of Alvai East, Karaveddy in Sri Lanka follows the Shaiva Siddhanta worship philosophy. The rituals are mainly a combination of offerings, puja (ritual worship) and parikaram (circumambulation). Offering of sesame oil for abhisheka (ritual bathing) and flGHting of lamps - as part of the puja - is an essential component of any Shaiva worship. Temple offerings also include milk, flowers, incense and fruits, and a prasadam is subsequently distributed to the devotees. Traditional worship includes reciting hymns, specially Hymn to Lord Murugan, and chanting vedic mantras, such as the Gayatri Mantra and Rudram. In addition, there are occasional homams (fire rituals) that involve chanting of Vedic mantras and the offering of ghee, rice and other items as oblation into the sacrificial fire.
