Wesley Methodist Church was established in 1791 by John Clarkson, a former slave trader who had become a devoted Methodist. Clarkson started the church initially as an evangelical mission center, but eventually created a functioning African Christian church. His aim was to rescue freed slaves and spread the Gospel message to the indigenous people of Sierra Leone. From the church's early beginnings, the African spirituals were incorporated into its worship, which eventually led to the development of the unique sound of West African Methodist worship. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Sierra-Leone.
