St. Augustine's Church In Sierra-Leone is a Catholic Church situated in Freetown. It was founded by the Archbishop of Freetown in 1925, in response to a large influx of people coming from all over West Africa to what was then called Sierra Leone. The Church is a special place of worship for those of Catholic faith and is dedicated to Saint Augustine of Hippo. It is one of the best churches in Sierra-Leone which you must visit.

History:

 Although St. Augustine’s Church in Sierra-Leone was founded in 1925, its history can be traced back to the arrival of the Portuguese in Sierra-Leone in 1486. The Portuguese brought with them priests and a desire to convert the native population to Catholicism. During the slave trade, this Catholicism was reinforced in many areas, as the Portuguese allowed churches, as well as their religion, to continue to be active in most of the areas they occupied. After the abolition of slavery, many people returned to their original roots and churches, and St. Augustine’s Church was established as a place of worship and community in Freetown. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Sierra-Leone.

 St. Augustine’s Church is the oldest Roman Catholic church in Sierra-Leone. It was built on the site of an old slave barracoons. The Church has a capacity of 500 people for services, and has a nursery and primary school building located close by. It is home to a convent of 18 sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
