Methodist Church In Sierra-Leone: History,Facts, & Services

The Methodist Church in Sierra Leone began in the late 1820s when a Royal Navy ship, the Nereus, landed in Freetown with two preachers of the Wesleyan Mission Society from England. It was during this time that Christianity began to spread in Sierra Leone. The official beginning of Methodism in Sierra Leone was on February 1, 1845 when a Church was founded in Freetown. Since then, the Church has spread rapidly throughout the country and now has over 2,000 churches and 500,000 members. The Church's primary mission is to provide an environment which encourages individuals to live Christian lives. The Church has several centers for Christian education, which include theological campuses, primary and secondary schools, orphanages, and clinics. Some of the Church's social outreach activities include providing medical assistance to the less privileged and helping to fund educational scholarships. The Church also provides pastoral support to members for various physical, psychological, and spiritual needs.
