History:
Rosslyn Chapel, originally named the Collegiate Chapel of St. Matthew, was founded in 1441 by Sir William Sinclair, a Scottish nobleman. The chapel was designed in the late-Gothic style and completed in 1486. Its features reflect the tastes of the day. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Scotland.

Rosslyn Chapel measures 61 feet (18.6 m) long and 30 feet (9 m) wide and its ceilings reach up to 95 feet (28.9 m) in height. Over 20 carvings embellish the cap stones of the chapel representing knights, angels, animals, and foliage. The chapel also has a secret underground vault that has been unopened for centuries.

Services are held in Rosslyn Chapel today and fortunately, a few of Rosslyn’s original stone carvings remain, making the chapel a popular tourist attraction.
