Begun in the 15th century, it has undergone numerous renovations and additions over the years. It is located on the main road from Edinburgh to Hawick, and is a Grade A listed building.

The earliest records of a place of worship in Rosewell date from 1568, but the parish church is believed to have been established in the 15th century. The oldest parts of the building still standing today date from around 1600 when the church was significantly enlarged. Between 1690-1714 further alterations were made, including the addition of two galleries and the pulpit and font date from this period. Further restoration work was undertaken in the 19th century. The church clock was donated in 1848 and is still in working order. The mausoleum was built in 1895 and is a memorial to Sir Arthur Balfour, Earl of Balfour and Prime Minister from 1902-1905.
