The mosque is believed to have been constructed by the companions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to mark the spot of Mubaahila - the historic pact of mutual prayers between the Muslims and the Christians as narrated in the Holy Quran. This pact was known as Mubaahila (‘test’, or ‘trial by prayer’). According to tradition, this pact was made between the Prophet and certain Christian leaders from Najran. Both parties agreed that the side whose prayer was accepted by God would be considered victorious. Consequently, the believers prayed fervently that day and legend has it that the mountain above the mosque heavily rained with dates. This was taken as a sign of God’s acceptance of their prayer and as a result, the Muslims emerged victorious from the pact.
