Masjid al-Salam (also known as the Grand Mosque of Makkah) is one of Islam’s holiest mosques and is located in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The Mosque has been through major renovations and additions throughout the centuries but a majority of it remains the same. At the centre of the Mosque, lies the Kaabah, the holiest place for Muslims and it houses the Black Stone. The total complex covers a huge area of 356,800 square metres surrounded by a massive wall of 690 metres in length. The mosque has seven minarets, each dating back to different points in history, including the oldest 200 year old minaret by Sulayman bin Al-Sultan - the Ottoman Sultan - built in 1760. The two prayer minarets stand 76.5 metres high. Each tower has a peak composed of three balls painted gold. The other minarets are spread across four locations around the Ka’aba. The interior design of the Mecca Mosque is an architectural marvel, with white marble pillars, ceiling, domes, and walls. The core of the mosque is a central courtyard that is surrounded by several porticos, with a total area of 108,000 square metres wide. In the center of the courtyard is the holy Kaaba, surrounded by tiled walkways and arched columns. The entrance to the Mosque is one of the most notable features. It is marked by two massive, intricately designed gates. The main gates have five-arched sections with four large doors underneath them. The base of the gates are decorated with colorful tiles and intricate patterns. Their upper levels are decorated with inscriptions and surrounded by projects with multi-colored tympana. Masjid al-Salam also has several buildings and facilities including the library, as well as several galleries for visitors. The library is the largest in the world and contains over 500,000 books on Islamic culture and history. It has an adjoining mosque which is used for special ceremonies. Visiting Hours:

Masjid al-Salam (the Sacred Mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia) is open to visitors and worshippers throughout the year and around the clock. The hours of the daily prayer and Jummah prayer (Friday noon prayer) vary depending on the season and on the position of the sun. According to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, regardless of the season, the hours of prayer and their adhan (call to prayer) are announced five minutes before their beginning, during the noon prayer. The mosque also opens its doors to visitors during the month of Ramadan, offering suhor (pre-dawn meal) and iftar (dinner after sunset). Visitors are allowed to enter and pray inside the mosque as long as they are dressed modestly and do not disturb other worshippers or visitors. The rules and regulations of chanting or reciting verses during the prayer inside the mosque must be followed, and visitors must also abide by the security and safety rules and regulations.
