Architecture:

Masjid al-Salam, or the Mosque of Peace, is situated in the historic Red Sea port city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. It was designed by Abdul Rahman A. Al-Jumair, and completed in 1988. The complex consists of a central prayer hall, surrounded by flanking porticoes, a fountain, and minarets. The central prayer hall is a two-story, air-conditioned space that measures 55 metres by 37 metres. The space is formed by two major structural elements – four rows of reinforced concrete columns that support a roof, and a series of concrete arches that form the surrounding porticoes. The roof is a traditional flat concrete slab with coffers, and extended skylights that provide natural daylighting. The surrounding porticoes are composed of a series of 12 meter tall, wedge-shaped arches. Each arch supports a tall, timber-framed window, covered in stained glass. At the base of each arch, a shallow stair leads down to a fountain, which is built in the center courtyard. In plan, the porticoes form a starburst pattern around the prayer hall, with points radiating from a central circular space. Two matching minarets flank either side of the prayer hall, rising up to the height of 33 meters. These feature limestone cladding and traditional Ottoman dome-shaped roof structures. The minarets are also topped with four decorative finials. Overall, Masjid al-Salam features a striking combination of traditional Middle Eastern and contemporary architectural styles. The central prayer hall resembles a traditional Islamic mosque, with a classic dome-and-arches motif, while the minarets—flanked by stained-glass windows and surrounded by a starburst of porticoes—is distinctly modern. The visiting hours for Masjid al-Salam in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia are from 5AM – 12PM and 4PM – 11PM. During the visiting hours, visitors must be appropriately dressed and covered, and women are to cover their hair, neck, and wrists.
