Masjid al-Jabal (Mecca) In Saudi-Arabia: Brief History,Architecture,Visiting Hours, & Travel Information

Architecture:

Masjid al-Jabal is an historical site in the Islamic holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia. It is said to be the site of the first mosque on Earth, and as a result, the architecture of Masjid al-Jabal has had a major impact on the development of Islamic architecture. The design of Masjid al-Jabal is attributed to Zayd ibn al-Harith (died 825 CE), a well-known architect of the Umayyad period. Historically, the mosque was a key pilgrimage site, and many of the key elements of its architecture remain today. The original structure was a 'minaret' – an open, open-air structure in the middle of the mosque which was used for prayer. The minaret is built around a tall rectangular column with a square base. At the top of the column is a terrace where the faithful can look out over the city of Mecca. The terrace is surrounded by four corner towers that rise to a height of almost 14 meters, and the top of the minaret is crowned with a dome. The mosque is surrounded by pillars that support the arcades that enclose the square-shaped prayer hall. Inside the hall, worshippers must line up in four directions to face the Kaaba, located in the central portion of the prayer hall. The walls of the mosque are decorated with intricate stucco reliefs and colorful tiles that represent the Qur'an. On the western side of the mosque is the 'Gate of Repentance' which leads to the 'Well of Zamzam'. This well was said to be used by Muhammad and other early Muslims who prayed near it. The well still contains water and is used by worshippers to this day. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
