Whosoever Baptist Church—formerly known as the East Hill Street Baptist Church—was consecrated in October of 1889 when Reverend W.B. Sampson organized a small church. Reverend Sampson was a pastor who was dedicated to the service of African American people and dedicated himself to creating a place of religious refuge. The church grew to become a vital part of the African American community and provided spiritual and social solace during a time of tremendous struggle.
