St. Benedict's was founded in 1951 to serve the Catholic community of Metairie. It was the first Catholic Church founded in the area since the 19th century. The first Mass was celebrated by Father Thomas Kehoe on Easter Sunday, 1951. The original church building was erected in 1953 and its first parish priest, Reverend Lawrence Schultheis, was appointed in 1954. Through the years, the original church building has been modified several times to accommodate the growth of the parish. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Saint Lucia.
