Santa Maria in Publicolis In Rome: History,Facts, & Services

Santa Maria in Publicolis is a Catholic Church located in Rome, Italy. It was originally built in the 9th century and reconstructed in the 13th century. It is considered one of the oldest churches in Rome. The church is dedicated to St. Mary and plays an important role in the religious and cultural life of Rome. It has a unique architecture and is known for its mosaic decorations, ancient architecture and intricate details. History Santa Maria in Publicolis was originally built in the 9th century. It is not clear who built the old church but it is believed to have been the local aristocracy. In 1180, Pope Lucius III reconstructed the church to become a parish church and replaced the former building. The church was named “in Publicolis” as in antiquity the area nearby belonged to the Publicius or Patricius family. Facts The church of Santa Maria in Publicolis is one of the oldest churches in Rome and is known for its unique and ancient architecture. It is built on top of a Roman period sanctuary and contains many ancient artifacts. It has a beautiful antique paint on the exterior walls, a spectacular entrance arch, 17th century stucco decorations, a wooden choir and an ornamental frontage. Services Santa Maria in Publicolis provides various religious services to its parishioners. These include daily masses, religious ceremonies, baptisms, weddings, confessionals and funerals. The church also organises cultural activities such as concerts, art exhibitions, theatre performances and lectures. It is open to the public on Sundays.
