Discover - Francesca Romana - Fact, History and Travel Information

Francesca Romana was a Roman Catholic saint, who lived in the thirteenth century. She was venerated for her extreme piety and charity. The daughter of a minor noble of Rome, Romana was born in 1284, and moved to a convent in Trastevere at the age of 11. From there, she joined a group of women known as the "holy trinity" and devoted her life to pious living and charity. She underwent several miracles throughout her life, including surviving a series of plagues. Her last miracle was attributed to the Virgin Mary. Throughout her life, she was devoted to helping the poor and helping those in need, particularly in marrying away poor young women who were unable to marry. This wasn't just limited to Rome, but throughout Italy as well. Her lifestyle was an example for many people, and she was venerated as a saint in 1329 by Pope John XXII, who built her a chapel in Rome. Today, St. Francesca Romana is one of the main patron saints of Rome and a popular pilgrimage destination. She is also the patron saint of travelers and the protector of tourists in Rome. Her feast day is celebrated by the Roman Catholic Church on the 23rd of April. Her remains rest in the Church of Santa Francesca Romana, situated only a few kilometers from the Colosseum, and her relics are venerated by Rome's faithful.
