History:
The original 9th century structure of San Salvatore was built as a memorial to martyrs of the early Christian persecutions by Emperor Decius and Emperor Valerian. The church was eventually deconsecrated and left to fall into disrepair until its reconstruction in the 17th century. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Rome.
