Terme Romana refers to the public thermal baths in the ancient Roman city of Rome. It was an important part of the Roman culture and served as a major hub for public activities. The baths were divided into three main categories: public, private, and mixed (patronized by both men and women). Public baths were open to all citizens, while private baths were for elites. Mixed baths, however, were reserved for members of the imperial family and their guests. The majority of the baths opened in the first century AD, although there were some that already existed in the pre-Roman era. During the heyday of the Roman Empire, the number of public baths had grown to almost 300 around the city. Most of these baths served as a type of gymnasium as they offered a wide range of athletic and therapeutic activities. The baths were used as a social meeting point, but they also had a number of religious associations due to their prominent location in the city. The Vestal Virgins, the goddesses of the hearth, often visited them for bathing rituals and purification. The bathhouses played a role in the cultural and social life of the city from the Republic through to the Late Antiquity when they were gradually abandoned. Today, the thermal baths are popular tourist attractions and some of them, like the Baths of Caracalla and the Baths of Diocletian, have been partially restored.
