The Roman Catholic Suburbicarian Diocese of Ostia is one of the seven suburbicarian sees of the Roman Catholic Church, located in the area of Ostia, an ancient port city of Rome. It has been a residential see since the eighth century, under the reign of Pope John VII. It was elevated to the rank of a metropolitan archdiocese in 1824, after the re-establishment of the Roman Catholic hierarchy in Rome in 1814, by Pius VII. The Archbishop of Ostia is a member of the College of Cardinals, and is known as the Dean of the College of Cardinals. The Diocese of Ostia is now home to a number of important churches and monasteries, including San Clemente, San Paulo fuori le mura and Santa Maria in Trastevere. It is also the site of an archaeological park, the Ostia Antica, which contains the remains of the ancient port city of Ostia, including the Forum and the Temple of Augustus.
