Discover - Pozzo alla romana - Fact, History and Travel Information
Pozzo alla romana is a type of deep well developed by the Ancient Romans and used throughout the Mediterranean region from the 2nd century BC. The structure consists of a vertical cylindrical wall, usually of brick-faced concrete and made up of several courses of brick laid in a slightly inward leaning conical shape. A ceramic filter was installed at the bottom to filter water and two or more water pipes were installed at the bottom of the well to collect and transport water. The pipes were connected to a large chamber at the top of the well which would collect and store the water. Pozzo alla romana were typically used to collect and store rainwater or other sources of water and could be found throughout the Roman Empire. The design of the well allowed for a much greater capacity of water storage than traditional shallow wells.
