Discover - Cimitero militare francese di Roma - Fact, History and Travel Information

Cimitero militare francese di Roma is a militarily cemetery located in Rome, Italy. It is the final resting place for thousands of French soldiers killed during the two World Wars, as well as for those of the Italian Expeditionary Corps fighting alongside the Allies. Located on Via Nomentana, it is surrounded by an impressive wall and its cemetery chapel stands as an elegant testimony to the sacrifice of these brave souls. The cemetery is managed by the French defense ministry, with the help of the Embassy of France in Italy and the National Association of the Fallen in France (ANACIF). It is symbolic of the strong ties that have been formed between Italy and France in times of war and peace. The cemetery holds the remains of 4884 French soldiers. Many of these graves are adorned with large white crosses, flowers, and poppies. There are also a number of unmarked graves for those who are unknown to this day. Moreover, during World War II, 15 Italian pilots were buried here. Cimitero militare francese di Roma is also the site of a magnificent memorial, built in 1954 to honor the fallen French soldiers. The memorial features a 12-meter tall stone obelisk, designed by French sculptor Armand Lapicque. It bears an inscription written in Latin: “Like the olive tree, the French nation never withers”. Today, Cimitero militare francese di Roma is a place of commemoration for both France and Italy. Every year, on November 11th, flowers and wreaths are laid at the memorial in remembrance of the fallen. It is also home to many special events and exhibitions, organized to pay tribute to those who gave their lives in the name of freedom.
