Church of the Roman Protomartyrs 'a Via Aurelia Antica' In Rome: History,Facts, & Services

Church of the Roman Protomartyrs 'a Via Aurelia Antica' is a Roman Catholic parish church located on Via Aurelia Antica in Rome, Italy. Originally built as a simple countryside church in the 5th century, it was later transformed into a major Papal basilica during the pontificate of Pope Gregory XVI. Today, it is a popular pilgrimage site and a popular landmark in the region. The church is dedicated to the Roman protomartyrs, a term used to refer to those martyrs who perished during the persecutions of the Roman Empire. Some of the highlights of the Church include a beautiful façade with elegant columns and a choir balustrade, and the High Altar of the Martyrs with an impressive painting by the Baroque artist Carlo Maratta. The church also serves as a museum, with artifacts from the Roman imperial period, including dozens of sarcophagi, Early Christian works of art, relics of Saint Sebastian, and the relics of some non-canonized martyrs. Services offered at the Church of the Roman Protomartyrs 'a Via Aurelia Antica' include mass services, baptisms, weddings and other sacramental services. On special occasions, such as feast dates and especially on June 29th (the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul) the church opens its doors to the public for special events. Finally, the church website offers virtual tours, making it possible to admire the beauty of the church from a distance.
