The church is home to the Center and Sanctuary of the Divine Mercy. The main shrine of the Divine Mercy was established in the church 1948 and still houses the icon of Jesus in adherence to the visions Sister Faustina had of the Divine Mercy in the 1930s. • Sister Faustina Kowalska was born Helena Kowalska on August 25, 1905, in Glogowiec, Poland. • As a child, she worked as a housemaid and received little formal education. • In August 1925, she entered the Congregation of Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in Plock. • She became a nun and her religious name was Faustina. • She had personal visions of Jesus and claimed to have conversations with him. • In one of these conversations, Jesus asked her to be the apostle of his mercy and that she devote her life to promoting the worship of the Divine Mercy. • Sister Faustina began to serve as a hospital nurse in the mid 1930s and kept a diary detailing her spiritual life, which included numerous visions and conversations with Jesus. • Her work was later compiled into a book titled The Diary of Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska and has been widely read throughout the world. • Also during this time, the Order of Divine Mercy was created based on Sister Faustina’s work. • In April 2000, Pope John Paul II canonized Sister Faustina Kowalska and declared her to be the patron saint of our era. • Her feast day is celebrated on October 5th each year.
