Church of Our Lady Queen of Polish In Poland: History,Facts, & Services

History:

The Church of Our Lady Queen of the Poles is a minor basilica located in the city of Wroclaw, Poland. The original medieval structure was destroyed during World War II and was rebuilt and restored to its former glory in the 1990s. The current church is one of Wroclaw’s most recognizable landmarks, with its majestic dome and steeple visible from far away. Its name comes from the title of the Virgin Mary as Queen of other Poles, referring to the devotion of the Polish people to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The history of the church goes back to the 12th century, when it was part of the Premonstratensian Monastery, which was established in Wroclaw in 1183. The first records of a wooden church at the site date back to 1275. Over the centuries, the monastery and its church underwent several major renovation projects as it grew larger and more elaborate in style. The most substantial renovation took place in the years 1741-1747, when the current Baroque building was designed and erected by the architect Bartolomeo Poncino. The interior of the church was lavishly adorned with ornate stucco-work and gilded sculptures. A large organ and a dome painting by the renowned artist Jan Henryk de Rosen were also installed as part of the renovation. In 1945, the church and monastery were completely destroyed during the siege of Wroclaw by the Soviet Red Army. After the war, the church and monastery were declared national monuments and reconstruction of the church began in 1995. The reconstruction project lasted until 2003, and the newly restored church was consecrated in 2004. Today, the Church of Our Lady Queen of the Poles is host to public worship services as well as a museum, displaying artifacts related to the history and architecture of the church. It is also a popular tourist attraction and is regularly visited by people of all faiths and backgrounds. It is one of the best churches in Poland which you must visit.
