Overview:
Wat Tha Phut is situated in an area that remains largely untouched by modern development. Visitors can explore the ancient brickwork of the dilapidated towers, pagodas and other structures, as well as admiring some of the beautifully maintained statues and sculptures. The temple has a tranquil and peaceful atmosphere, with the sound of monks chanting from sunrise to sunset.
Facts:
Wat Tha Phut is the largest archeological site in eastern Thailand, covering an area of over 200 acres. It consists of three sections, the ruins of five Hindu temples, the ruins of five Buddhist temples, and the present day temple with its resting Buddha image. The temple is also home to some rare and endangered species of animals, such as the tree squirrel and the Asian porcupine.
History:
Wat Tha Phut was built as a center of learning and religious worship in the 13th century by King Ramkhamhaeng. Over the centuries the temple has gone through several renovations and restorations, largely due to the efforts of the local monks and abbots. Today it is one of the most important and impressive ancient Buddhist temples in Thailand.
Travel:
Wat Tha Phut is located in Nakhon Sawan Province in central Thailand, about a two-hour drive from Bangkok. The temple grounds can be accessed from the nearby highway that runs along the Chao Phraya River. Visitors are asked to respect the sanctity and quiet of the temple and to dress modestly.
