Wat Pa Phupha Sawan is a sacred site and contains massive sculptures of Lord Buddha, as well as a variety of smaller statues and images. The Phu Pha Sawan complex is a large temple complex, with multiple shrines for worship and offering. Facts:
Wat Pa Phupha Sawan is one of the oldest temples in Thailand, with a history that can be traced as far back as the early 15th century. It is believed to have been built during the reign of King Rama III, who was the Thai king from 1758-1824. The main shrine of the temple is the large bronze-like statue of the Lord Buddha which stands at the center of the temple grounds.
History:
The history of Wat Pa Phupha Sawan dates back to the time of the foundation of Ayutthaya, which was the first capital of Thailand in the 14th century. King Rama III is believed to have been a major patron of the temple and is credited with rebuilding most of the structure. After the fall of Ayutthaya to the Burmese in 1767, the temple was destroyed and left ruined. King Rama V restored the temple to its former glory in the late 19th century, and it has since grown in size and importance.
Travel:
Wat Pa Phupha Sawan is located about 64 km south of Bangkok, in the province of Phitsanulok. It is easy to reach by car or bus, and public transport is available from Bangkok. Once in Phitsanulok, visitors can take a short 40-minute drive to the temple. Visitors are also welcome to stay in nearby accommodation and explore the area for a few days.
