Saan Phra Phuum is located in two districts of Chiang Mai Province - Mae On and San Kamphaeng. It covers a total area of about 52.20 square kilometers encompassing mountains, forests and historical ruins. Facts:
In 1938, during the reign of King Chulalongkorn, an area of bush was declared ‘Saan Phra Phuum’, a no man’s land, allocated to the religious establishment of Lan Na. This 3000 rai or 4.8 square kilometers area was meant to be a refuge for monks who wished to practice Buddhism in a peaceful environment. Saan Phra Phuum
History:
This area was home to many archaeological sites including sanctuaries, stupas, pagodas and enclosures. Archaeological excavation revealed historical artifacts that dated back to the 8th to 10th century A.D. In 2016, it was designated as a national historic site by UNESCO. Saan Phra Phuum

The area is popular among backpackers, hikers and nature lovers. Due to its historical and spiritual importance, hikers will pay pilgrimages to several sacred sites. Local operators offer multi-day trekking trips and guided tours for those who wish to explore.
