Phu Tham Phra is a historical and spiritual site located just outside of Phetchaburi city in Thailand and is believed to be over 2,000 years old. The temple is perched atop a hill and features stunning views of the countryside below.
Facts:
The original name of Phu Tham Phra was originally Phra That Phu Tham (translated as 'The Sacred Hill'). It is believed to have been built during the reign of King Marayongay of the Mon kingdom. The main temple complex is made up of several small structures, centered around a large gold Buddha which is the main point of worship. The grounds also include a stupa, monk’s quarters, and the ruins of a monastery.
History:
Phu Tham Phra is believed to have first been constructed during the Mon Kingdom era in the 1st century. Over the years, it has been an important religious site and has seen countless monks and pilgrims visiting to pay their respects. During the reign of King Rama IV, significant repairs and renovations were made to the temple, the most notable of which was the restoration of the main chapel.
Travel:
Visitors to Phu Tham Phra are welcomed to explore the temple grounds. In addition to the main chapel, there are several other smaller shrines and pavilions, as well as a stupa and monk’s quarters. Visitors can also take in the stunning views from the top of the hill. Phu Tham Phra is located about 40km from Phetchaburi city and can easily be reached by car or bus.
