The park has its origins in a much larger Udon Thani National Park established in 1975. It was later divided into two parts in 1990, with the Phu Muang Forest Park established as a separate entity to protect the evergreen forests in the region.

The best way to access the park is to drive from Ubon Ratchathani to Udon Thani and then follow the road north to the park. Once there, visitors can enjoy the array of activities and sights on offer, including camping, bird watching and mountain biking.
