Discover - Battle of Phu Tong Hoa - Fact, History and Travel Information
Overview:
The South Vietnamese Army launched an attack against the Viet Cong stronghold in the countryside known as Phu Tong Hoa Hill. After a 9-hour firefight, the South Vietnamese managed to secure the hill and hold it against multiple Viet Cong counteroffensives. They managed to repel those counteroffensives and emerge victorious.
Facts:
The Battle of Phu Tong Hoa Hill was fought from October 8-9, 1966 in Hau Nghia Province. The South Vietnamese Army outnumbered the Viet Cong forces three-to-one and were able to secure the hill. During the battle, the South Vietnamese forces managed to destroy four Viet Cong bunkers and kill more than 300 enemy soldiers.
History:
During the Vietnam War, Hau Nghia Province was a heavily contested area, and the battle of Phu Tong Hoa Hill was the South Vietnamese's attempt to secure the province. After their successful victory, the South Vietnamese were able to gain control of the areas in the region and a foothold in Hau Nghia Province.
Travel:
While the battlefield has long since been abandoned, the area is still a popular destination for tourists who wish to visit the site of one of the war's most famous battles. Visitors to the area can find memorials and monuments dedicated to the brave soldiers who fought in the battle.
