The church was erected in 1595 and elevated to a Minor Basilica on February 20, 1982 by Pope John Paul II. It is said to be the oldest Roman Catholic cathedral in the Philippines.

The Minor Basilica of St. Martin of Tours owes its foundation to Spanish Franciscan Fray Pedro de Alfaro. It was first built as a stone church in 1595 as the first church of Naga City. In 1702, its foundations were destroyed when the Naga River overflowed its banks. Fray Alonso Jimenez rebuilt it in 1714 and the present-day structure dates from this time. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Philippines.
