The construction of the Madre de Dios Chapel was commissioned by the local parish priests in 1774. Construction was completed in 1775, and it was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary under her title of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. The chapel served as a place of worship and refuge for the local community as Ilagan was then a remote area. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Philippines.
