Daraga Church, also known as the Nuestra Señora de la Porteria Church, is located in the town of Daraga in the southwest of Albay province, Philippines. The church’s construction was started in 1773 and completed in 1814. The church, with an architecture that’s a mix of Baroque and Neo-Classic styles, is one of the oldest churches in the Bicol Region and has been designated as a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines. History The Daraga Church was founded in 1773 by Franciscan Friar Juan Foces using the funds given to him by 18th century philosopher Miguel Vida. Friar Foces wanted to build the church to honor Nuestra Señora de la Porteria, the patron saint of the faithful people of Daraga. It was not until 1814, however, when the church was completed. Facts - The Daraga Church is considered to be a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines. - The church has an architecture that is a mix of Baroque and Neo-classical styles. - The main altar of the church is made from yellow teakwood, silver and gold. Services The Daraga Church is still open for regular church services and other events such as wedding ceremonies and baptisms. The church also has a museum and a library that houses several artifacts and books from the 18th and 19th centuries.
