The Museo de Sitio Manuel Chávez Ballón is located within the Inca ruins of Machu Picchu and is the only archaeological museum in Peru dedicated to the Inca's history and culture. The museum was inaugurated in June of 2002 and is named after Manuel Chávez Ballón, an archeologist and guide born in Cusco, Peru who studied the ruins and devoted his life to educating the world about the Inca civilization. Situated above the Sacred Plaza of Machu Picchu, the museum aims to provide a complete and comprehensive history of the Inca civilization for those who visit Machu Picchu. The museum contains various artifacts from the Inca era that Chávez Ballón collected over the years. These artifacts include pottery, ancient tools, jewelry, clothing, and more. These artifacts illustrate the everyday life and social practices of the Inca peoples. The museum also provides audio presentations and interactive touch screens to facilitate learning for visitors. Furthermore, an observation tower, the "Vista de los Incas", was constructed to provide tremendous views of Machu Picchu and the surrounding environments. The museum is managed by the Peruvian Ministry of Culture and is located near the Machu Picchu ticket office and information center. It is open every day from 09:00 - 16:00.
