Our Lady of Lourdes Church In Panama: History,Facts, & Services
Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Panama is the oldest Catholic Church in Panama. The history of this church began in 1873 when it was inaugurated as the parish of the now-famous Our Lady of Lourdes. It was built to honor the Virgin of Lourdes, who had been proclaimed as the patron of Panama and was a symbol of national piety. Since that time, the Church has become an important part of the spiritual and cultural life of Panama City, a place of worship that is visited by both locals and tourists alike.
The Church is located on Avenida Central, just a few blocks from the Canal Zone area. Constructed in the Roman style, Our Lady of Lourdes Church features a beautiful bell tower that can be seen from many parts of the city. The exterior of the building is adorned with Corinthian columns, while the interior is characterized by stained glass windows and sculptured marble decorations. Outside the Church, visitors will find a courtyard filled with flowers and shrubs, as well as a large fountain, which serves as a reminder of the role that water plays in Panama’s faith.
Services at Our Lady of Lourdes Church include Masses, weddings, baptisms, morning and evening prayers, special events, and Vespers. The Church also regularly offers retreats and seminars on prayer, spiritual direction, and other religious topics.
