The Good Shepherd Church In Palestine: History,Facts, & Services
The Good Shepherd Church In Palestine is a missionary church formed in 1871 by American and European missionaries affiliated with the Episcopal Church. The mission was spurred by a growing interest among scholars in the early Christian communities that existed at the time of Jesus. It was the second Episcopal Church formed in Palestine, the first being St. George's Church in Jerusalem. Originally called the American Church in Jerusalem, it was renamed the Good Shepherd Church in 1889 in honor of the biblical parable of the Good Shepherd. The church offers regular services in English, Arabic, and Hebrew, as well as liturgy, bible study, and a variety of programs of service and outreach. The Church’s outreach includes projects to support women’s empowerment, develop children’s literacy, and provide art and music training to disadvantaged youth in the local community. The Church also runs a Bible Study Center and Library at its Beit Sahour complex, and organizes ecumenical activities for local and international students and pilgrims.
