Saint saviour monastry In Palestine: History,Facts, & Services

Saint Saviour Monastery, located in Bethlehem in the West Bank, is a community dedicated to the witness and service of peace in Palestine. It is the oldest brotherhood of monks in the Holy Land, and is located in the heart of the holy city of Bethlehem, near the Church of the Nativity and the Shepherd’s Field. This monastery serves not only as a worship center but also as a center for social and spiritual improvement, offering assistance to the homeless, elderly, and those in need. History Founded in the year 527, the first monks of Saint Saviour arrived in the Holy Land from their homes in the East, mainly from Egypt, Lebanon, and Syria. Legends attribute the foundation of the monastery to two Byzantine noblewomen, along with some Egyptian monks, who settled in the local area. The monastery was built in the traditional style of a crucifix, complete with rows of columns, marble floors, and arches. Over the years, the monastery has been rebuilt several times due to destruction caused by rulers and earthquakes. The 16th-century British historian William of Worcester noted that “being in the faith of Rome, [the Monastery] has been many a time plundered by the Saracens, yet still repair’d divers times.” Services Services at the monastery include monastic hospitality, tours, guided retreats, spiritual guidance, and lectures. They also hold special events, such as a monthly meeting on the first Friday of each month to discuss peace and justice. Furthermore, the monastery has a small library open to all visitors. The monks of Saint Saviour strive to promote peace and reconciliation in the region through interfaith dialogue and various projects. They also support local families and communities with aide, medical assistance, and education. Additionally, the monastery is open to all visitors, regardless of their faith.
