The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem is the largest Catholic Church in the Holy Land. It is the oldest Roman Catholic diocese in the world. It is headed by the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, the title held by the Archbishop of the Latin Church in Jerusalem. The patriarchate is part of the Roman Catholic Church’s Eastern Catholic Churches. The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem has a long and illustrious history that dates back to 1099 when the First Crusade captured the holy city of Jerusalem and established the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem. In 1597 the Latin Patriarchate received Papal bull of Gregory XIII that made its establishment official. After this, a succession of Latin Patriarchs have held the title of Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem right up until today. The Latin Patriarchate's primary role in the Holy Land is to provide pastoral care for its Catholic faithful. It is the major Roman Catholic Church in the region and has the responsibility for running parishes and providing spiritual and religious assistance to all the Catholics. The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem also works to maintain and promote Catholic-Christian values in the Holy Land. It holds evangelistic services, organizes a pilgrimage and holy days, supports charitable works, carries out interfaith dialogue and advocates for peace. The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem also serves as a bridge between different communities and cultures in the Holy Land. It is an important partner in the Church's ecumenical efforts and works to strengthen the Christian presence in the Middle East.
