The Church of the Shepherds Field is a Catholic sanctuary located in Beit Sahour in the state of Palestine. It is believed that the church marks the spot where shepherds witnessed the appearance of the angels of the Nativity. The church was constructed between 1872 and 1890, and it was restored in 1954. It is now maintained by the Franciscan Order. History The Church of the Shepherds Field is believed to be the location of the Angelic Visit of Bethlehem. According to the Gospel of Luke, shepherds were out watching their flocks when a multitude of angels appeared, announcing the news of the Nativity. In the 4th century, Byzantine Emperor Constantine marked the spot, and in the 7th century, the Moslem Caliph, Abd Al-Malik built a small chapel at the site. Later, the Crusaders built rooms for pilgrims to rest in near the site.
