Architecture:

The Al Rawdah South Mosque in Mutrah, Oman is an example of mid-20th century religious architecture in the country. It was designed by the Omani architect, Ali Salim Said bin Masoud Al-Arfazy in 1977 and completed in 1982. The mosque is situated in a place of great importance in Islamic history, as it marks the site of the death of Ali, the cousin and son-in-law of the prophet Mohammed. The mosque is built out of local stone and is known for its unique combination of traditional and modern styles. It is a two-storey rectangular building with four minarets rising from its corner. The minarets are covered in white marble and topped with domes. In contrast to the traditional whitewashed walls of Omani mosques, the Al Rawdah South Mosque features blue, pink and yellow domes and white marble columns which have been carved into elaborate floral patterns. The interior of the mosque is decorated with decorative geometric designs reminding worshippers of the omnipresence of Allah. The main hall features two round arches which lead to a large prayer hall. This is surrounded by three other rooms - two of which have small mezzanines - and is topped with a large dome.
