Al Ghubrah North West Mosque is located in the wilayat of Al Ghubrah, about six kilometers from Muscat International Airport. It was built in the 1970s, and is now the largest mosque in the area. It consists of three large prayer halls, each with a capacity of 1000 worshippers, and five minarets. It has two main facilities to accommodate pilgrims during Ramadan and the Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca). The Al Ghubrah North West Mosque is an example of the traditional architecture of Oman. The facade of the mosque is constructed of traditional limestone and the interior is finished in ornate marble. The minarets feature intricately carved plasterwork and are topped with circular domed finials. An oculus containing glass and coloured tiles is also featured at the apex of the central dome. The interior of the mosque boasts intricate geometric and floral designs, as well as beautiful mosaic artwork. Interior courtyards are designed to enhance the sense of tranquillity and reflection.
