It is believed that this temple was established in 1535 by the then governor of Odisha, Sri Prataparudra Deb and was constructed by the great saint Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu when he visited Cuttack. It is believed that once a farmer from the nearby region had prayed to Goddess Chandi for relief from a long standing drought in the region. After his prayer a beam of light emerged from the ground and goddess Chandi appeared. She granted the farmer his wish and asked him to build a temple honoring the goddess and sacrifice goats to her. As per her gesture, the temple was built and it stands proudly till today. The temple is visited by thousands of devotees every year who come here to seek blessings of the goddess. A special puja is held for Katak Chandi on Maha Astami during the Dusshera Festival.
