Holmenkollen Chapel is an iconic chapel built in memory of Norwegian explorer, polar explorer and humanitarian, Roald Amundsen. With seating space for 400 people, the chapel was designed to bring the spirit of Norway and its polar exploration history to life, while providing a spiritual space to reflect on our lives and the struggles of past adventurers. The chapel, which opened in 2009, is also a tribute to Amundsen and his historic achievements, such as completing the first successful transit of the Northwest Passage in 1906. The chapel was the vision of Her Majesty Queen Sonja, patron of the Norwegian Explorers Association, who laid the foundation for Holmenkollen Chapel in 2006. Queen Sonja's vision was to create a place of beauty and quiet reflection to celebrate the courage and achievements of Roald Amundsen, who was born inthe nearby village of Borge. The chapel stands at the base of the famous Holmenkollen ski jump – the home of the annual Norwegian ski jump championship. The chapel was designed by the renowned architects of Snøhetta, the same team who designed the famous Oslo Opera House.
