Flesberg stave church is a stave church located in Flesberg, Norway. It is considered one of the best preserved stave churches in Norway and the oldest in Buskerud. The building is estimated to have been erected around 1150 AD, during the Grand Age, and it is the only one from that time which is still in use, having served as a church for hundreds of years. History Flesberg stave church is believed to have been built in 1150, around the same time as Gol stave church. However, the earliest recorded mention of the building is from 1277, when it is mentioned in a letter by Pope Johannes XXI. In the 16th century, Flesberg served as the cathedral of the reformation bishop of the Diocese of Flesberg and remained the center of the diocese until 1759, when it was moved to nearby Kongsberg. Facts The church is built almost entirely of logs, although some stone and metal parts have been added throughout its life. The building is in the shape of a cross, with two towers at the entrance and two turrets at the back. The main hall measures 23.5 by 19.5 meters and the side room measures 7.5 by 14.5 meters. The church has an exterior height of 17 meters. Services Today, Flesberg stave church continues to be used for religious services and contains a large congregation of worshippers. The church is open for sightseeing year round and visitors can learn about the history of the building, as well as its significant role in the spread of Christianity in Norway.
