The church was built in just 12 weeks in 1767. In 1814, increased seating was added to accommodate the growing population. In 1850, a new tower was added, as well as a new choir room and a western chapel. In 1883, the church was renovated, and more seating was added.

Bygland Church is part of the Church of Norway and is the oldest church in Bygland. It is a long church with a cruciform design, a tower in the west, and a choir in the east. The limestone walls are whitewashed and the roof is made of slate.
