The foundation stone of Saint Paul's Church was laid by Bishop Strachan in 1835 and it was designated the cathedral of the Diocese of Toronto. The original building was completed in 1842 and was damaged by a major fire in 1849 but was fully restored two years later. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Nigeria.
