History:

The diocese was initially formed as the Diocese of Abuja in February 1983, as part of the re-structuring of the Nigerian Catholic Church to form quasi-national entities. In March 1996, Pope John Paul II elevated the diocese to that of an archdiocese, making Abuja the Metropolitan See of the region. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Nigeria.

The Archdiocese occupies the entire Federal Capital Territory, an area of 7,310km², and stretches from the borders of Kaduna, Nassarawa and Niger states to the Atlantic coast. It is estimated that about 6.4 million people live within the archdiocese. The Catholic Church has more than 560 parishes and 200 schools, as well as tens of health facilities, orphanages and technical schools providing vital services in the region.
