It traces its history back to the arrival of a British missionary in the early 19th century and the formation of a mission in Badagri in 1842. Since then, the Church has spread to many different regions across Nigeria. The Anglican Communion Church of Nigeria is led by the Primate, who is appointed by the Synod which meets every four years. It is divided into four ecclesiastical provinces - Abuja, Benin, Lagos, and the Niger Delta - and comprises around 270 dioceses. Each diocese has its own bishop as well as a number of rectors, priests and lay readers. The Church is committed to evangelism and missions, as well as social based ministry and development. It also works in partnership with many international churches and organisations. The Anglican Communion Church of Nigeria is part of the worldwide Anglican Communion, and shares the same doctrine, worship, and governance as the Church of England. It offers a wide range of services in Africa, from pastoral care and marriage counseling to education and healthcare services. It also has a number of ecumenical relationships with other churches both in Africa and abroad.
