Chapel Maria Auxiladora In Nicaragua is a Catholic Church located in Granada, Nicaragua. It was originally constructed in 1875, and expanded in 1926 to the building we know today. It is most well known for the statue of the Virgin Mary in its courtyard, which is said to have miraculous powers. It was built as a dedication to the Virgin Mary, and was named Chapel Maria Auxiladora. In 1926 the chapel was expanded to its current size and design. The original chapel was located in downtown Granada, and was moved to its current location in 1958. Facts The chapel stands at about 93ft high, and its roof has the shape of a minor, topped off with a Mexican style lantern. The chapel's main building is around 80ft wide and is in typical Nicaraguan colonial style. The chapel also holds several art pieces, some of which are over 400 years old. Services The chapel holds regular religious services including Mass every day. Every year, on December 8, the chapel holds a festival in honour of the Virgin Mary. During the festival hundreds of people come to the chapel to celebrate. Other events and activities are also regularly held at the chapel in addition to Mass, such as bingo nights, Catholic retreats, and other social gatherings.
